Margaret Eleanor Tobin (Bjornson) passed away peacefully on May 7, 2026 surrounded by her family and the love she so freely gave throughout her life. Margaret was predeceased by her beloved husband, Mosie, with whom she built a wonderful life over 48 years of marriage.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Kevin and Deborah, John and Ewa, Kimberly and Jamie Black and Alison Tobin and Daniel MacNeil; her grandchildren: Erin and Fiona Tobin (Sean Nicholas), Sean, Philip and Laura Tobin (Chris Tzountzouris), Duncan and Signe MacNeil, Jackson and Lexi Black; her sisters-in-law Nell, Hedy, Fran and Josephine; her cousin Ruth Árnadóttir; her partner Nils Lindberg; and many nieces and nephews.
Margaret was also predeceased by her parents Gudmundur and Ragnhildur Bjornson; her brothers Jack, Franklin, Thor, John, Donald and Siggi; her sister Solrun; brothers-in-law Ben, Peter, Joey; sisters-in-law Sveinbjorg, Kristin, Mary, Runa, and Ella; nephews Chris, Lawrence and Braden; and nieces Brenda, Lynn and Marilyn.
Born October 24, 1936, in Framnes, Manitoba, near Arborg, Margaret spent her early years on the family farm with her beloved dog Frisky, enjoying farm life and the local dances at Geyser Hall. She attended a one-room rural school from grades 1 to 10. After graduating from Ardel High School, Margaret went to Normal School, where in 1955, she met Moe, her life partner. Their relationship blossomed through two years of correspondence and visits across the miles separating them. They were married on July 11, 1959, in Arborg and settled in North Kildonan, where Moe built the home he and Margaret shared for 40 years.
Margaret began her teaching career in a grade 4 classroom at Prince Edward School. She also taught at Melrose and Munroe before leaving the profession to raise her family and to continue her education by attending night and summer school, where she earned her Bachelor of Education at University of Manitoba. She returned to teaching in 1978, completed her Special Education certificate and resumed her career in Resource. She maintained close friendships with retired teacher colleagues throughout her life, regularly organizing lunches to stay connected.
Margaret cultivated a beautiful vegetable garden and made yummy homemade jams and jellies from berries picked at the farm in Grandview. Margaret passed down her love of Icelandic cooking to her children and grandchildren, teaching them to prepare the perfect vínarterta and pönnukökur. The family treasures memories of camping expeditions throughout Canada, the United States and summers at the trailer in Hnausa.
Margaret and Moe loved to travel, visiting Europe, Uruguay, New York, Boston, Las Vegas, Arizona, Mexico, Cuba and Iceland (witnessing Hekla’s eruption in 1980), along with numerous trips to Toronto. Following Moe's passing, Margaret continued exploring, travelling to Greece, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, and Ireland.
An accomplished golfer and curler, Margaret enjoyed rounds at Harbour View and Shooters golf courses (often with her friend Shirley) and bonspiels at West St. Paul Curling Club. Margaret loved movies, especially Alfred Hitchcock suspense thrillers. She sewed so many dance and Halloween costumes for her grandkids. In her later years, Margaret became a devoted sports fan. She loved cheering for the Winnipeg Jets, the Blue Bombers, and even the Toronto Blue Jays, but curling was always her favourite. She faithfully followed every game, keeping up with scores, highlights and the latest news and sharing in the excitement with family and friends.
Margaret’s legacy lives on through her children and grandchildren. As Amma, she cherished attending recitals and games and she followed each of her grandchildren’s accomplishments and milestones with great pride and interest. Her love, encouragement and gentle spirit remain a beautiful legacy that lives on in each of them.
A Celebration of Life will be held on August 9, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home and Cemetery, 4477 Main Street, West St. Paul. In Margaret's memory, donations may be made to Myeloma Canada.

To the "Tobin Family": Mrs. Tobin was my grade 8 teacher at Munroe Junior High during the academic year 1960-61. I am saddened to learn of her death and I share your sorrow although, I am sure to a lesser degree. Mrs. Tobin was a special person. I remember her for her almost constant smile, her soft voice, her gentleness and her awareness and empathy when required by a student. I have thought of her numerous times over the past decades mostly recalling her smile and her goodness. Mrs. Tobin was good for me both personally and academically. I know that if I could thank her for this she would respond with humility. I met Mrs. Tobin many years later at an event at Munroe Junior High. I introduced my wife and myself and she replied, "I know who you are, I have followed you". She truly was that kind of person and teacher. May God Bless her. - Posted by: W. H. I knew Margaret from many years of doing her manicures and pedicures. She would always speak highly of her children and grandchildren. She would talk about curling and the many places she had travelled too. Iceland as I remember being one that stood out in my memories as being one of her favourite. She was very proud of her heritage. Christmas I was alway gifted a vinarterta. I have had many in my lifetime as I came from Gimli and truly hers was the best. Margaret and Moe Tobin were our neighbors for many years. They were the best neighbors anyone could ever ask for! They were kind, they were respectful, they were helpful and the nicest people ever! Kevin, John. Kim and Alison, my family and I are very sorry for your loss. Your parents were amazing and they were wonderful parents to you. We appreciated getting to know you and living next door. I have an especially fond memory of Margret, way back in approx. 1949. My family lived 1.25 miles west of her home and on this especially important occasion she walked the 1.25 miles to my farm to specifically play with me, keeping in mind that I was four years old, which made her 13 years old. She played with me the whole afternoon, then walked home. For many days after that I kept looking longingly down the road hoping that she might once again come to play, but alas…..I did bump in to Moe several times on the transit bus in Winnipeg and made sure to pass on a “hello” to Margret, but always hoping that I might meet her and give her a big hug for making my day so especial…..till we meet again dear Margret.
